It's very different from any book I have ever read. I tend to shy away from streams of consciousness books, but this one, with it's intertwined streams of consciousness from different characters was pretty fascinating. The complicated sentence structure would make this nearly impossible to understand as an audio book, but I liked that it made me focus on what was happening a little more than most books. Septimus Smith was the most intriguing character for me because of his battle with shell shock. I'm married to a warrior who returned from Afghanistan a little different than when he went, and I'm so proud of the work he accomplished. But I know that the world looks a little bit different now than it did before, so I found it encouraging, in a way, that people were recognizing this almost one hundred years ago, even if it manifested a little differently.
